Incredibly costly: 70% of polled Arsenal fans think club are suffering from contract mistake

Mesut Ozil has had a tough year or two, with the German not enjoying his best form for club or country. In the lead-up to his contract renewal, the German looked lazy and poor, and though he finally agreed fresh terms at the club, little has changed since.

We recently made the case that signing Mesut Ozil to a long-term new deal was a mistake. Citing his mixed recent form and a lack of game-changing moments since the renewal, it’s tough to view Ozil’s retention as something that has paid off thus far.

Indeed, this is something that many Arsenal fans seem to agree with, too. We recently asked supporters whether giving Ozil a new deal was a mistake, and in response, many fans have said that it was.

A whopping 70% of those polled felt confident in saying that renewing Ozil’s contract was a mistake, whilst just 30% remain in favour of the German.

It’s a surprising result, as just a few years ago, Ozil was a fan favourite at the Emirates. He still is, to some extent, but there is no denying that his stock has fallen significantly over the years.

He’s no longer a player that Arsenal can rely on every single day, and given his huge salary, that’s clearly something that is irking fans. Ozil could, obviously, still come good – but for many of the Arsenal faithful, they haven’t been impressed, it seems.
