Manchester City have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side maintain their 11-point lead at the summit of the Premier League at the weekend, before reaching the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
Pep Guardiola’s men comfortably dispatched of Tottenham 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday to record a 16th successive Premier League victory, at the same time remaining 11 points clear at the top come the end of the weekend following Manchester United’s win at West Brom on Sunday. And the Citizens edged even closer to a first trophy under boss Guardiola by beating Leicester City on penalties in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, with goalkeeper Claudio Bravo the hero by saving Riyad Mahrez’s spot-kick in the shootout.
Thus, there have been several buoyant City fans in the Tavern in the last few days, many of whom are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Times, which suggests that their team are lining up a move for Burnley defender James Tarkowski in the summer.
The 25-year-old only made the move to Turf Moor back in 2016 but struggled to dispose centre-back pairing Michael Keane and Ben Mee in Sean Dyche’s team last season, earning just 19 Premier League appearances as the Clarets finished 16th in the top-flight.
However, Keane’s departure to Everton has opened the door for the Englishman, and he has taken his chance with starts in all 18 of their league matches this term, in which time he has helped the Lancashire-based outfit to the joint-best defensive record in the division (alongside the Manchester duo).
And his excellent efforts for Burnley have reportedly attracted the attention of Guardiola’s City, who are reportedly lining up a summer move for Tarkowski, what with there slight uncertainty over the long-term future of Eliaquim Mangala, and the long-term fitness of Vincent Kompany.
But with Arsenal also thought to be interested, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the Burnley man in 2018.
Landlord’s verdict: Burnley’s achievements so far this season have arguably only been bettered by the brilliance of Manchester City, with the Clarets’ defensive record playing an integral part in their success so far.
Sean Dyche’s men have conceded just 12 goals so far this term which is the least alongside City and Manchester United, and one man who has played an influential role in that is James Tarkowski.
And the 25-year-old appears to have been recognised for his efforts as reports suggest that Pep Guardiola’s City are interested in landing the Englishman next summer.
The centre-back department is somewhat lacking at the Etihad Stadium and could well be even more thread-bare come the summer, thus increasing the chances of the Citizens making a move for Tarkowski at the end of the season.
