Liverpool supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side dismantle struggling West Ham 4-1 on Saturday evening, a result which moved the Merseysiders up to fifth place in the Premier League table.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the East London outfit off the back of beating Huddersfield Town and Maribor, and goals from Mohamed Salah and Joel Matip in the first half at the London Stadium sent them on their way to a third win in the space of seven days. And although Manuel Lanzini got one back for the hosts ten minutes into the second period, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain restored their two-goal cushion almost immediately before Salah completed the rout with his second and Liverpool’s fourth 15 minutes from time.
Thus, there has been a buzz around our resident Reds supporters in the Tavern this week, and they are likely to be further encouraged by a recent report from The Daily Telegraph, which details that Adam Lallana will be stepping up his return from injury next week.
The 29-year-old hasn’t featured at all for Liverpool this season after injuring his thigh during pre-season, this all after a fantastic campaign last time out in which he scored eight goals and laid on seven assists to help Klopp’s men finish fourth in the Premier League and thus return to the Champions League.
And with 14 caps for England in the last two years, the former Southampton midfielder is becoming an increasingly important player for both club and country, so news that he will be playing in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Melwood next week is surely going to delight both Klopp and indeed Three Lions chief Gareth Southgate.
And reports suggest that should Lallana get through next week’s clash, he could well be in contention to return to first team action against ex-employers Southampton on November 16.
Landlord’s verdict: Adam Lallana was outstanding for Liverpool last season in helping them return to the Champions League, and his absence has occasionally been felt by the Reds so far this term.
A thigh injury back in August has meant that the 29-year-old has missed all 11 of their Premier League matches thus far, but he could well be in contention to play their 12th against Southampton on November 16 should he come through a behind-closed-doors friendly at Melwood next week.
News that Lallana is nearing a return is sure to delight manager Jurgen Klopp and indeed the Liverpool faithful, many of whom recognise that their side are a better team when the midfielder is in the starting eleven.
