Initial contact made: Arsenal making moves to secure contractual agreement with 27-year-old

Arsenal’s decision to tie-down Mesut Ozil to a new deal was met with unanimous delight in the Transfer Tavern, with fans celebrating long into the night. It was seen as a deal that had no downside for the Gunners, but according to the Mirror, that may not be strictly true.

The Mirror report that Arsenal’s decision to renew Ozil’s contract with a big financial contract could have an impact on their negotiations with a few other players. Specifically, Aaron Ramsey is mentioned by name – with Arsenal reportedly opening initial talks with the Welshman’s entourage. Indeed, it is said that Arsenal are expecting several players’ demands to rise following the agreement with Ozil.

This isn’t much of a surprise, of course, given that Ozil is simply one part of an extensive list of players, and so it’s only natural that a few of his teammates will want to get their fair share.

The most significant takeaway from this, though, is the simple fact that Arsenal are looking to secure the future of Aaron Ramsey – which is great news for the Gunners.

He has been in fantastic form so far this season, providing energy, determination and quality through the heart of the midfield.

At 27-years-old, he’s a player in the prime of his career, and given the inconsistency currently surrounding Arsenal’s midfield, his retention is important.

His current contract expires in 2019.

Landlord’s Verdict

Ramsey, though a divisive player in the past, has really come of age over the last few years.

Providing fantastic drive and energy through the midfield, the role that he plays is massive.

He has also emerged as quite the offensive option for the Gunners, too, allowing less reliance on Arsenal’s more offensive stars.

A new deal makes sense, regardless of the cost.
