The Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern were absolutely delighted to avoid an FA Cup upset at the hands of Luton Town yesterday. Indeed, while Premier League survival is undoubtedly the key for our resident Geordies, there’s nothing quite like a good cup run.
It was an enjoyable afternoon for the Toon Army, who were able to catch their first real glimpse of Freddie Woodman in goal against the Hatters. Much is expected of the England U20 ‘keeper, who saved a penalty as the Young Lions won the World Cup in their age group last summer, though many of our punters clad in black and white believe he needs a loan move first.
With that in mind, reports from the Chronicle have proven rather interesting. They claim an injury suffered to Rob Elliot – one likely to keep the Republic of Ireland man out of action for two weeks – will apparently mean Woodman is forced to wait on a potential loan departure away from St. James’ Park.
Karl Darlow is surely likely to continue in goal in Elliot’s absence, though the sight of one of England’s most promising talents on the Newcastle bench will be a welcome one on Tyneside.
Woodman didn’t get all his own way on his Newcastle debut, though few would doubt his potential. If the Magpies can land another ‘keeper for cover, the England U20 international would benefit hugely from a loan move to the upper echelons of the Championship.
