The Daily Mail have caused more than a couple of unhappy faces this transfer window and the latest claim concerning Manchester United is no different.
The paper report that given the injury to Real Madrid’s Xabi Alonso, Manchester United can now forget about signing Los Blancos team-mate Luka Modric this summer.
United were of course keen on the former Spurs man even before he signed for the Spanish giants and missed out on his signature last summer.
Now after a less than stellar first season in Spain, David Moyes clearly held designs on brining the Croatian international back to the Premier League.
Given the sheer strength and depth of the Real Madrid midfield, which already boasted the likes of Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil, before the additions of Casemiro and Asier Illarramendi, Modric’s place looked to be under even greater threat as the La Liga season kicked off.
Sadly for both David Moyes and Carlo Ancelotti, a huge blow was dealt with the news that Alonso had broken that ever troublesome fifth metatarsal and would be out of action for at least three months, meaning Luka Modric suddenly became rather indispensable to Ancelotti.
Moyes has already seen bids for Cesc Fabregas and an approach for Thiago Alcantara fail this summer, and is currently struggling to hold onto forward Wayne Rooney with Jose Mourinho playing his ever successful mind games and this latest blow will not go down well at Old Trafford.
Did Manchester United ever stand a chance of landing Modric this summer anyway? Let us knwo your thoughts below.
