Newcastle United supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their team bow out at the fourth round stage of the FA Cup for the second successive season after losing 3-0 at Chelsea on Sunday.
Rafa Benitez’s men booked their place in the last 32 of the world’s oldest club competition courtesy of a 3-1 victory over Luton Town earlier this month, but they were no match for Antonio Conte’s side in West London on Sunday. A first half brace from Michy Batshuayi as well as a free-kick from Marcos Alonso in the second sealed a comfortable success for the Premier League champions, thus leaving the Magpies with just a relegation battle to concern them between now and the end of the season.
Thus, there have been many despondent Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, yet their mood is likely to be improved by a recent report from The Daily Mail, which suggests that an ‘inquiry’ has been made by their club for Viktoria Plzen striker Michael Krmencik.
The 24-year-old has been at the Czech top-flight side since 2011 and in that time has scored 32 goals in 68 appearances for the club, including 16 in just 20 appearances this term to help the side to first place in the division, 14 points clear of nearest rivals Slavia Prague.
And it seems that Magpies chief Benitez is targeting the striker in a bid to save Newcastle’s season, with reports suggesting that the North East giants have submitted an ‘inquiry’ regarding the Czech Republic international’s availability.
And with just 22 goals scored in their 24 Premier League games so far this season, Krmencik appears to be exactly what they need, but whether the Magpies can get a deal done for the forward before Wednesday’s deadline remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Newcastle United’s tally of 22 goals from their 24 Premier League games this season simply isn’t good enough, and will need improving if they are to remain in the top-flight come the end of the season.
And manager Rafa Benitez clearly knows that as reports suggest that an ‘inquiry’ has been launched for striker Michael Krmencik, scorer of 16 goals in just 20 games for Czech side Viktoria Plzen this term.
The 24-year-old will reportedly set the Magpies back £10 million, but with Premier League survival seemingly on the line, it’s a move the North East giants simply must make in the last 48 hours of the window if they are to bolster their chances and indeed save their season.
