The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern were shocked to hear news of the impending departure of Arsene Wenger. A fair chunk of fans don’t know a life without Wenger at the helm, and so it will certainly be a huge shock to see someone else in the dugout next season.
Arsenal, though, must quickly move on and ensure that they find a good successor to the legendary Frenchman. The shoes that they are going to have to fill are huge, and so they must go for someone with a proven track record.
Our landlord, then, thinks that an audacious move for Chelsea boss Antonio Conte could be just the ticket.
The Italian is beginning to look likely to leave Chelsea at the end of the season, and so if he’s available, it’s a deal that makes perfect sense.
What Arsenal need is someone that can make an immediate impact. Conte proved that, last season, he can bring just that. With his innovative methods and proven track record, the Italian could be just the manager to bring Arsenal into a new era of success.
He’s also a manager that rates hard work above all else, and that is something that has clearly slipped at Arsenal as of late. The Italian is an old-fashioned manager in that no stone goes untouched, and that discipline will help the Gunners turn over a new leaf.
He’s no stranger to the hot seat, either, having managed at two of Europe’s biggest clubs in both Chelsea and Juventus.
A move may also appeal to him as it won’t require him to shut up shop and move abroad again. He seems relatively settled in London, and so the opportunity to move across town could be perfect both for him and for Arsenal.
For Arsenal, then, a move for Conte makes sense – even if it does seem audacious at first glance.
