Liverpool supporters have been somewhat downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side concede a late leveller to only draw 1-1 with rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the Toffees off the back of three successive victories in all competitions, including a 7-0 hammering of Spartak Moscow in the Champions League just a few days previous. And they looked on course for another crucial three points when Mohamed Salah brilliantly gave them a first half lead, only for Sam Allardyce’s side to hit back 13 minutes from time when Wayne Rooney slotted home a spot-kick resulting from Dejan Lovren’s clumsy foul on Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Subsequently, there have been many quiet Liverpudlians in the Tavern this week, although they are likely to be intrigued and perhaps encouraged by a recent report from Corrierre dello Sport (via The Liverpool Echo), which suggests that the Reds have registered an interest in Atletico Madrid defender Sime Vrsaljko.
The 25-year-old made the move to the Spanish capital back in 2016 yet has since gone on to make just 32 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side, of which only seven have come this term in a campaign blighted by niggling injuries to his foot and back.
As such, his future at the Wanda Metropolitano is far from certain, and Liverpool are one side reportedly keen on landing the Croatia international in January in a bid to bolster their defensive ranks, what with the Reds backline having conceded more than any other side currently in the Premier League’s top five.
And recent reports suggest that Liverpool’s interest has been ‘confirmed’ by the Spanish club, thus suggesting that a deal for the right-back, who can also play left-back, could well take place in January.
Landlord’s verdict: Liverpool’s defensive woes have been well documented for a while now, what with the Reds having conceded more goals so far than any other side currently in the top five in the Premier League table.
So reports that they are interested in Atletico Madrid defender Sime Vrsaljko aren’t overly surprising, but recent reports that their interest has been ‘confirmed’ by the La Liga outfit suggest that a move could well take place in January.
And given that manager Jurgen Klopp has struggled in the left-back department in recent times, as well as the long-term injury to Nathaniel Clyne on the other side, a move for the 25-year-old full back could be exactly what Liverpool need to compete for silverware in the second half of the season.
