Southampton supporters have been more upbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side end a run of nine games without a win by edging past Championship club Fulham 1-0 in the third round of the FA Cup last weekend.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men has prior to their visit to Craven Cottage picked up just four points from a possible 27 in the Premier League, a run which has seen the Saints fall to just a place above the bottom three. However, they got back to winning ways on Saturday as a James Ward-Prowse strike 16 minutes before half time was enough to secure a 1-0 win over the Cottagers, thus booking their spot in the last 32 where they’ll face Watford at the end of the month.
Thus, there has been a bit more positivity among our resident Southampton fans this week, and they are likely to be further encouraged by a recent report from The Daily Mirror’s Live Blog (7.55am), which suggests that their club are now leading the chase for Monaco’s Guido Carrillo.
The 26-year-old made the move to the Stade Louis II back in 2015 and has since gone on to score 21 goals in 95 games for the club, seven goals of which came last season to help Leonardo Jardim’s side win the Ligue 1 title.
But with just two starts for the French side this term, the Argentine doesn’t look like commanding regular football at the club, and as such Southampton are reportedly keen on exploiting that situation, and bringing him to St Mary’s.
And recent reports suggest that the door has been opened for Pellegrino to seek a reunion with Carrillo, having worked together at Estudiantes, as Crystal Palace have reportedly ‘withdrawn’ their interest, leaving the Saints in command of a pursuit which could set them back £15 million.
And with the South Coast outfit evidently in need of striking reinforcements, it’s a deal which could, and perhaps needs to, take place in the coming weeks.
Landlord’s verdict: Southampton’s goal-scoring woes have been well documented this season, with just 21 goals in their opening 22 Premier League games a tally which will need increasing substantially if they are to avoid relegation.
And manager Mauricio Pellegrino appears to be in the market for a striker as he is reportedly seeking a reunion with Guido Carrillo, who played for the Saints boss during his stint in charge of Estudiantes.
But with first team football difficult at Monaco, the 26-year-old’s future appears elsewhere, and it could be at St Mary’s as Crystal Palace have reportedly ‘withdrawn’ their interest, leaving the door open for Pellegrino to secure a reunion with the Argentine forward at Southampton.
And given their striking struggles, it’s a deal they have to get done before the January 31 deadline.
