Crystal Palace and Newcastle United fans were reasonably buoyant in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend, what with the Eagles finally recording a Premier League victory, and the Magpies drawing at Southampton.
Roy Hodgson’s Palace went into their clash with champions Chelsea having lost each of their opening seven league matches, failing to score in any of them, but an own goal from Cesar Azpilicueta and a strike from Wilfried Zaha sealed a deserved 2-1 win for the Eagles on Saturday afternoon to lift the doom lingering around Selhurst Park.
Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle however were unable to secure a fourth league victory of the season despite twice leading at Southampton, with goals from Isaac Hayden and Ayoze Perez putting them in a great position only for Manolo Gabbiadini to twice equalise for the Saints.
And there may be more frustrating news to come for our resident Magpies supporters if a recent report from Fotomac is anything to go by, a report which will certainly intrigue those Palace fans lining up at the bar in the Tavern.
And that’s because they report that the Eagles are ready to launch an improved bid for Besiktas striking sensation Cenk Tosun, having missed out on the 26-year-old late on in the summer window.
The Turkey international has been in wonderful form for the domestic champions since moving there back in 2014, having netted a remarkable 55 goals in 128 games for the club, 24 of which coming last term as they eased to the Turkish title.
And his fine goal-scoring exploits attracted the interest of several sides over the summer, notably Palace and Newcastle, so much so that the former submitted a €13.5 million bid for Tosun, although it was too late in the window for genuine consideration.
Yet recent reports suggest that the Eagles will try to land the striker again by bidding up to €22 million for the 26-year-old, leaving Benitez’s Newcastle with much to ponder regarding their own pursuit of the Turkish ace.
Landlord’s verdict: Crystal Palace’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea on Saturday was not only their first Premier League win of the season, but also the first goals they have scored in the league this term.
So it’s little surprise that they reportedly remain interested in Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun, whom they missed out on late in the summer, but certainly would have helped them during the current striking crisis at Selhurst Park.
And their reported pursuit, which could see them bid up to €22 million for Tosun, will come as a blow to Newcastle United, who are also keeping tabs on the 26-year-old in a bid to bolster their own attacking ranks.
But whether Palace’s latest interest forces manager Rafa Benitez back into the Tosun chase very much remains to be seen.
