Intriguing developments in future of Newcastle star as reports emerge

Newcastle United supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side stutter prior to the international break with successive Premier League losses at the hands of Burnley and Bournemouth.

Rafa Benitez’s men won four of their opening nine league matches to sit sixth in the table back on October 21, but things haven’t quite gone as well since then for last season’s Championship winners. The Magpies lost 1-0 at Burnley on October 30 to suffer a third league away defeat of the campaign before going down to Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth by the same scoreline five days later at St James’ Park, with Steve Cook’s injury-time header enough to seal the three points for the Cherries to lift them out of the relegation zone.

Thus, there have been many despondent Newcastle supporters in the Tavern this week, but they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Daily Mirror (via The Chronicle), which suggests that midfielder Mo Diame is seeking a move away from the North East in January, namely to Steve Bruce’s Aston Villa.

The 30-year-old made the move to St James’ Park back in 2016 after a two-year stint at Hull City, and helped the Magpies return to the Premier League at the first time of asking last term with three goals and three assists in 37 league games.

However, the former Senegal international has earned just one top-flight start so far this season under Benitez, and given his efforts in that against Burnley a few weeks ago, he’s unlikely to get too many more over the coming weeks.

And it appears that Diame is seeking to end his time in the North East, with reports suggesting that Bruce’s Villa are interested in a move for the midfielder, which the latter himself reportedly would be keen on.

And these developments, having been linked with Cardiff City over the weekend, are sure to intrigue our resident Newcastle fans, many of whom haven’t been overly impressed by the 30-year-old this term, and as such are unlikely to be too fazed if he left in January.

Landlord’s verdict: Mo Diame was somewhat surprisingly given his first Premier League start of the season by Rafa Benitez against Burnley a few weeks back, but the midfielder produced a forgettable display to suggest that further appearances are highly unlikely.

And the 30-year-old may well recognise that as reports suggest that he and Aston Villa are interested in a move in the winter window, which would see Diame link up once again with Steve Bruce having done so at Hull City.

Not long ago, the midfielder was the beating heart of the West Ham midfield, but his efforts against the Clarets suggest that he’s not at that level anymore, so a move to the Championship could well make sense for all parties involved as part of many expected changes at Newcastle over the coming months.
