West Ham’s Declan Rice is making a huge name for himself in the Premier League at such a young age.
The two time West Ham Young Player of the Year is becoming an increasing force for The Hammers in midfield, and the big clubs in England will come knocking very soon.
It is not so much his ability that makes him such a rising star, but his versatility. Currently a midfielder under Manuel Pellegrini, he is equally adept at playing centre-back, with many seeing his future being in defence.
It is for that reason why he would be the perfect fit at Tottenham. Spurs’ manager Mauricio Pochettino likes his defenders to be comfortable on the ball, with duo Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld being prime examples of this. The amount of cutting and penetrating passes the Belgian defenders do means that they are sorely missed when out.
However, with constant uncertainty surrounding Alderweireld’s future, as well as the fact that Vertonghen is 31, no one knows how long either will be at the club. That is why 19-year-old Rice would be the perfect heir to those two.
Furthermore, like Eric Dier, the ability to play in both defence and the midfield will make Rice a huge asset to the club. With the likes of Victor Wanyama and Dier at the club, the Argentinian manager clearly likes midfielders that are defensively sound, and Rice would provide that.
Rice has made an impressive start to the 2018/19 season, albeit in a team that has struggled at times. However, the player barely featured during The Irons’ tough run at the beginning of the season, and the club’s resurgence has coincided with his return to the team. However, as his prominence in The Hammers’ midfield increases, so will the interest from other clubs in the Premier League. West Ham fans may have to be resigned to the fact that he may not be at the London Stadium for long.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
