Sunderland have been very impressive in the current campaign, other than losing to Portsmouth at Fratton Park recently.
The Black Cats will have their sights set firmly on securing automatic promotion to the Championship this season, with two games in hand over the likes of Luton Town and Portsmouth.
However, with the January transfer window on the horizon, perhaps Jack Ross will be looking to bring in a couple of players to boost his side’s chances.
Indeed, one area that the Black Cats need to strengthen in is at the pinnacle of the attack, as Josh Maja has struggled for support at times.
Sunderland have been linked with a move for Jermain Defoe in recent times, but he doesn’t have many years left in him and has attracted interest from a number of other clubs, so they may struggle to bring him in on loan in the January transfer window.
Therefore, Ross should turn his attention to bringing in another striker in the form of Connor Wickham, who has slowly worked his way back into proceedings at Crystal Palace after a 17-month injury lay-off.
Indeed, the Eagles will inevitably be looking to bring in a couple of attackers due to Christian Benteke’s injury and lack of conviction in front of goal, along with Alexander Sorloth’s failure to score goals. So, this could open the door for Connor Wickham to depart on loan, as regular minutes will be crucial after returning from such a long time out on the sidelines.
Josh Maja has struggled for support at the pinnacle of the attack in the current campaign, so it would make sense for Ross to secure the services of a perfect partner for the youngster. And, Wickham is a very tall forward who has the ability to hold up the ball and has shown he can score goals in his career, so he could definitely provide support for Maja and would compliment his game massively by flicking the ball on for him to run onto, while dragging defenders away to create space for him to work in.
