Given that Premier League clubs have to wait until January at least to amend, chop and change their squads, the Football Transfer Tavern is asking readers to reflect and select who exactly the most pointless signing of the summer was.
Whether a player hasn’t settled, whether a player was too old or simply whether their signing simply wasn’t required, punters have been given a nine-man list to choose from including misfiring Chelsea star Samuel Eto’o who isn’t growing any younger, new Liverpool scapegoat Iago Aspas and former prime Arsenal target turned Manchester City reserve Stevan Jovetic.
Also making up the most pointless stakes are Arsenal’s Emiliano Viviano, Chelsea’s Willian, Everton’s Gerard Deulofeu, Manchester City’s Martin Demichelis, West Ham United’s Andy Carroll and West Bromwich Albion’s Digeo Lugano.
With Chelsea’s import of 32-year-old Samuel Eto’o in particularly, the Blues should have probably realised that the former African Player of The Year’s best days are certainly behind him following his bargain move from Anzhi Makhachkala and thus far, he has looked a shadow of his formerly quick and lethal self.
Having failed to land high profile duo Radamel Falcao and Edinson Cavani who opted to join Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain respectively, Jose Mourinho’s side spent the majority of the summer scrambling around in their very public pursuit of Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney which ultimately ended in failure, thus yielding the panicked signing of Eto’o.
The Rooney pursuit hit a brick wall following something as simple as mass Red Devils fans’ applause during the clubs’ early season bore draw at Old Trafford and bang, the potential story of the summer was dead.
With Eto’o yet to register a goal for his new employers, is he the Premier League’s most pointless signing of the summer or does somebody else deserve the infamous accodale?
