So Jose Mourinho has deemed the Inter Milan squad lacking in depth, but what does this mean for Davide Santon? The Inter Milan youngster is an accomplished left full-back and even made the position his own during the latter half of last season, prompting Mourinho to sell Maxwell to Barcelona during the summer. If another left sided defender is brought in then where does Santon’s future lie?
The 19 year old only broke into the Inter Milan team a year ago but so far this season speculation has been rife over his future at the club.
When Manchester United visited the San Siro to play Inter in last seasons Champions League, Santon was faced with probably the toughest challenge in world football… to contain the world’s best player, Cristiano Ronaldo. He set about this test with great vigour and passed with flying colours, matching the Portuguese throughout the match. After the final whistle Santon stated, “Ronaldo? He didn’t scare me. I felt worse when I did my high school exams, however, he is a great player and you have to try and anticipate him. He never beat me that night, if anything he kept away. We then swapped shirts and he told me to continue like this.” A bold statement from the youngster.
Earlier this season when he learned he would not take part in a match against Roma, he stormed from the training ground, and his attitude has been somewhat questioned by Mourinho.
He is currently just recovered from injury and with Christian Chivu out for the season with a fractured skull; it will only be a matter of time before Santon’s future is clear. If he does not make the Inter starting eleven, then expect the Italian international to demand a move that will guarantee first team football.
A number of teams have been mentioned, including Genoa and Lazio, also West Ham have expressed an interest in the full-back.
Where will Davide Santon be playing his football come February?
