With the closing of the transfer window, many may have forgiven Alan Pardew for forgetting about the Demba Ba saga that plagued his summer. However it appears that was just wishful thinking. According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are in the front seat to steal the Senegalese forward who is disgruntled over a proposed contractual improvement.
According to the report, Ba’s team are still stalled in discussions with Newcastle regarding an improvement on his current £50,000 a week deal. This isn’t the first outburst either – as we all know, Ba’s agent and family have been particularly vocal about the future of the Newcastle striker. As a result Liverpool have become interested in the Newcastle number 9, with a exchange deal including Andy Carroll a possibility if any transfer were to go through.
Such a deal would no doubt be great for the Reds who despite knocking 5 past Norwich on Saturday have struggled for goals this season. Borini has yet to score in the league and Liverpool are already looking like they might depend on Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard to provide the goals. Ba would be an excellent addition to a thin Liverpool squad yet Kopites certainly shouldn’t get excited just yet.
In my view, this is yet another rumour trying to cause unrest in the North East. Ba has explicitly said that he is happy at Newcastle and playing for Alan Pardew, he simply wants to be playing games and scoring goals. It appears highly likely that his ‘contractual demands’ are more the work of his agent in an attempt to land a huge payday. Rumours that Ba will leave are just an attempt to force Pardew’s hand, something that the Senegalese striker’s team have so far failed to do.
In addition, even if he were to leave Newcastle then it is highly doubtful that Ba would opt to ply his trade on Merseyside. The striker has become one of the most revered in the Premier League and, despite an apparently greedy agent, would be highly touted should he become available. With a lack of Champions League football and a young side struggling in the Premier League this season, Brendan Rodgers might find it incredibly difficult to lure Ba to Anfield.
These rumours are just becoming old now. People will have their opinions about Ba’s reported desire for a new contract but at the end of the day the striker is entitled to discuss terms with his club. For now however, I think many football fans would greatly appreciate it if Ba’s team did their business in private, rather than creating rumours every other day.Like what the TT have on offer?
