Is it going to be a quiet summer for Newcastle United?

West Bromwich Albion v Newcastle United - Barclays Premier LeagueOur punters at the Transfer Tavern are beginning to wonder whether Steve McLaren is becoming that man who never gets the round in, as the Telegraph report that it could be difficult for the former England manager to make immediate transfers this summer.

Indeed, the successor of John Carver was forced to email the Toon Army supporters, in order to reassure them that new faces would be at St James Park come the beginning of August. Though McLaren insists he is simply biding his time to find the right player for Newcastle, it is hardly going to be music to the ears of fans who have seen more high profile exits than entrances in recent years.

The Telegraph also believes that recently McLaren passed up the opportunity to bring Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli to the North East. Though Balotelli hardly set Anfield alight last year, the Italian may certainly be able to help improve on the 40 goals managed last season. However,  it seems that McLaren is keeping his cards close to his chest, as he lets other managers make the payments for now.
