‘Is it too early to ask for our Xmas miracle?’ – Newcastle fans react to pre-United news

Newcastle United supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern during the international break after seeing their side succumb to back-to-back Premier League defeats prior to the two-week interruption.

Rafa Benitez’s men made a solid start to the new season upon return to the top tier by winning four of their opening nine league matches, but their momentum was checked by Sean Dyche’s Burnley as the Clarets edged the Magpies 1-0 at Turf Moor. And the North East giants then suffered a fifth league defeat of the campaign just a few days later as a Steve Cook header was enough to secure Bournemouth a deserved 1-0 win at St James’ Park, thus instigating Newcastle’s fall to 11th place in the Premier League table.

Thus, there have been many deflated Magpies fans in the Tavern this week, and many as such aren’t particularly looking forward to their side’s trip to Old Trafford on Saturday to face Jose Mourinho’s second place Manchester United.

And their task has become even tougher in recent times as the Red Devils chief confirmed in his pre-match press conference on Friday that the trip of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, and Marcos Rojo are available for selection against the Magpies.

Both Ibrahimovic and Rojo sustained ligament damage back in April in a Europa League encounter against Anderlecht, while influential midfielder Pogba hasn’t featured for United since their Champions League win over Basel back in September.

But all three could well be involved against Benitez’s Newcastle on Saturday, which is news that hasn’t gone down terribly well with many Magpies fans on Twitter…
