Nathaniel Clyne has long been linked with a move to Manchester, United have been rumoured all season long to be lining up a move for Clyne when his contract at Crystal Place comes to an end this summer.
But it appears that the eye-catching performances of the England Under 21 defender have also gained admiring glances from the other side of the city, with The Mail Online reporting that both Manchester clubs are now keen on Clyne.
The young defender would match United’s recent policy of signing youthful defenders to mould them in the United way of playing, ready to take over from United’s current first choice thirty-plus centre back pairing of Vidic and Ferdinand when the time arrives.
While City may be considered to have the greater spending power these day this unlikely to be an issue as Clyne will be a free agent come the summer. Due to the tender age of the defender any side signing the Crystal Place youngster would be forced to pay compensation to The Eagles, with The Mail suggesting this is likely to be in the region of £2 million.
This would surely be a price either club would be willing to pay to prevent a player with such potential joining their local rival and biggest challenger to the Premiership title.
The Mail believe that City have the upper hand in negotiations as Clyne shares the same management team as City star Micah Richards. However its rare that anybody stops Sir Alex Ferguson from getting the player he wants.
