This time last year the Liverpool manager was looking to bring in a dynamic winger that can be used to bring out the best in £35 million pound signing Andy Carroll but Kenny Dalgish bought Stewart Downing.
To be fair he had just had a great year for Aston Villa and picked up the player of the season award but the fact that I have the same stats as Downing when it comes to goals and assists goes to show why Brendan Rodgers is already looking to bring in another winger.
Milos Krasic has fallen down the pecking order at the newly crowned Italian champions Juventus and wants out. He is often linked to the Premier League and this time The Daily Mail has said that he is destined for Anfield this summer.
Rodgers seems to have identified the midfield as his main priority for new recruits as it’s expected that Gylfi Sigurdsson is days away from signing a contract but although I think both these players will make great additions to the sqaud the need for a striker is more paramount. The return of Lucas will be welcomed back with huge arms and a large banner as the Brazilian, so used to being mocked by Liverpool fans, was sorely missed last season. Considering he was injured in November he still had the highest amount of successful tackles of any Liverpool midfielder last season.
Back to Krasic though and I think he would make a great addition to the line up at Liverpool. His presence could even bring the best out of Downing who always performs better when he isn’t the sole winger of a team: at Aston Villa there was Ashley Young and Gabby Agbonlahor to challenge for places and at Middlesbrough Adam Johnson would give him a run for his money. Plus after last seasons constant wood-work hitting near misses the only way is up for Downing.
The Juventus winger has been unfortunate as the arrival of Andrea Pirlo and his renaissance season meant that the need for a winger was void but Liverpool could be revitalised with a winger on either side of the midfield.
By exploiting the possibility of a quick counter attack down either wing and having the presence of Lucas in the heart of midfield Steven Gerrard could be freed to move forward and cause mayhem for opposing defences with his excellent passing and shooting ability. Having Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson as the understudies to Gerrard and Lucas respectively would help them to improve their games as well.
The likeliness of this transfer going ahead is high as Juventus wants to sell and it won’t be for too much which will make Mr Henry happy. With more competition and less pressure to deliver the crosses that Andy Carroll has been crying out for at the tail end of last season ,we could also see this transfer bring the best out of the man to take the England scape goat torch from previous holders Emile Heskey and Owen Hargreaves.
