It’s hard to believe Newcastle United were playing Championship football not too long ago and now they are challenging for a Champions League place and gaining plaudits throughout the land for their achievements.
And now could Newcastle win the race to sign a Champions League winner, on a FREE?!
According to reports Alan Pardew’s Geordies have entered the race to sign former Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou who won both the FA Cup and Champions League last season.
The 26-year-old Ivorian made over 250 appearances for Chelsea scoring 60 goals during a very successful spell in London. Kalou scored some important goals for Chelsea and has a lot to offer in the Premier League.
Schalke remain favourites for his signature but Kalou may feel a move to Newcastle could give him the opportunity to prove any doubters over his ability to play in our league wrong.
Kalou is obviously a casualty of the Chelsea re-vamp but he is a player who can be very underrated by some. He performed well at Stamford Bridge during his time there without ever really setting the league alight but he did find regular first team opportunities hard to come by.
A fate which may be fall him at Newcastle as Alan Pardew has built a very talented squad which performed so well last term.
It is clear Kalou’s Chelsea career is over regardless of who the new manager is, however, a move to Newcastle could quite easily see him warming the bench again. A move to Schalke or a more mid-table Premier League club may be the best option for a talented player who still has a long way to go in order to fulfill his potential.
