Didier Drogba’s move away from London in search of one last pay day in the far east has long seemed a foregone conclusion, his form had disappeared and he looked almost disinterested on the field.
However recent performances have made reports of his demise seem rather premature, and Sky Sports are now reporting that there could be an offer for Drogba to remain in London. Surprisingly though given his recent run of important goals for Chelsea this interest comes not from the powers that be at Stamford Bridge but rather White Hart Lane.
Sky report Tottenham Manager Harry Redknapp as saying of the Chelsea Striker, who is out of contract in the summer;
“He would be a great player for Chelsea to keep or for somebody else to take. Anyone would be interested but you would have to be able to afford his wages.
That is going to be the key. If he is on a free you are going to have to pay him a fortune.
“But he is a powerhouse when he is on his game. He is strong and almost unplayable when he is really at it.”
It is easy to see why Harry would be interested in the Ivorian, Drogba is exactly the sort of big powerful front man the Tottenham Manager has long been searching for. Adebayor was brought in on loan to try and fit this description and has so far managed to offer Spurs an extra dimension to their play.
But Didier Drogba’s performance against Tottenham, in the FA Cup Semi-final, served as a reminder to everybody of just what a motivated Drogba can produce, and at his best he is as Redknapp suggests “almost unplayable.”
While Redknapp does concede the wages of the Chelsea front man may be an issue, the absence of a transfer fee could allow Tottenham to find the weekly wage necessary to keep Drogba both in the Premiership and London.
