A story has been released in The Sun today that could be one of the most talked about transfers of the summer and in history that involved a defender. According to the Sun Manchester United have made enquiries about Chelsea and England left back Ashley Cole.
I’m sure many people of you reading this are making an “Ooooooooo” sound in your head to this news, as I did the same on reading the piece in the Sun, so lets see if this has the legs to carry it?
Manchester United have been on the lookout for a new left back for a while and have scouted many a young a promising full back in Europe. They want someone young to replace Patrice Evra who after his years of fine service is starting to slow down as age begins to set in.
So why would United go for a player that is about the same age and the same calibre? The main reason could be that Chelsea are yet to open contract negotiations even though 12 months remain until Mr Cole can talk to whomever he chooses.
Fergie maybe thinking that getting Cole on the cheap and rotating both left backs between Europe and the league would suffice for now but another important factor could change everything and that important factor is called Leighton Baines.
The Everton full back has many admirers but with a £15million price tag slapped on him United aren’t too keen right now. Whoever if he decides he wants a move then United will turn away from Cole and look to his younger England understudy.
At 27 Baines has time on his side unlike Cole and would also be welcomed a lot better into the dressing room after Cole stood as character witness in the recently infamous Terry trial.
If Cole did make the right noises and United were able to make him an offer then it would be up to Fergie about whether he is worth the risk and after the amount of trophies he has won you’d be a fool to argue with him but would it be worth buying a player with such an ego and high wage demands as Cole because he was on a cheap? No is the answer.
There is no doubting that Cole is one of the best left backs to wear an England shirt and many in Stamford Bridge would say he is the best in the world – although it would be hard to decide if they were being ‘sarcastic’ or not – but right now Fergie needs to look to the future as when it comes down to buying quality, Manchester City have the riches to always get the best of whatever’s out there. Besides even if Cole were to leave Chelsea I doubt he would head up north having been a London lad all his life.
This would be one of those transfers that, if it paid off, would be another reason to write Sir Alex’s name into the history books but for now it’s probably just an exciting bit of water cooler talk and no more.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
