Is this proof that Chelsea’s loan system isn’t working?

The Chelsea faithful here in the Football Transfer Tavern have mixed views on how Chelsea utilise the loan system…

Much has been made both here in the Tavern and within the British press regarding Chelsea’s use of the loans.

Opinions in the Tavern are often divided on the matter; some feel that it is exploitative, whilst others feel that it is a clever use of the league rules.

One thing that the fans here in the Tavern can agree on is that, for the most part, the system has been relatively unproductive thus far.

Thibaut Courtois is the only player to have successfully made the jump to the Chelsea first team; and it would appear that Chelsea are growing frustrated in how some of their players have developed.

However, the Blues are seemingly not placing the blame on the players themselves – the Blues are instead targeting the clubs that refuse to utilise their talented youngsters.

According to Bristol City’s chief operating officer Mark Ashton, the Blues have reportedly drawn up a blacklist of clubs that they REFUSE to do business with – following a succession of failed loans.

“They had tried these arrangements with English clubs before and, in their words, they hadn’t worked. They gave me a list of clubs they would not do business with” Ashton told the Bristol Post.

He has been talking to the Bristol Post following Bristol City’s capture of Blues starlet Tammy Abraham – and has revealed just how difficult it was to get it over the line.

He said: “We then did the deal with Chelsea and sorted all of the finances, which were far from straightforward.”

It looks like Chelsea are definitely starting to think more about how they treat their youngsters after a number of failed loans.

It looks like the scattergun approach of loaning was an abject failure from a Chelsea point of view.

Whilst Ashton does not specify which players may be the cause for Chelsea’s cautiousness, our landlord thinks he has a good idea of who it might be.

Nathaniel Chalobah had a number of failed loans, at clubs including Nottingham Forest and Burnley, whilst Patrick Bamford’s spell in the Premier League with both Norwich and Crystal Palace were even more disappointing.

It seems likely that a whole host of Football League clubs have lost the favour of the London giants.
