Very little good has come from the Netherlands Euro campaign this summer but one of the squad choices that raised a few eyebrows seems to have paid off.
18 year old Jetro Willems played every game with an eager athleticism and a will to learn. He occasionally showed a positional naivety but there is no doubt this young man has plenty of raw talent.
So much so in fact that the Metro reports that Manchester United scout, Martin Ferguson, has passed on a dossier of information to assistant manager, Mike Phelan, which gives a glowing report of the Dutch full back.
Ferguson seems to be looking toward youth this summer with Crewe starlet Nick Powell already signing for £4million after a fine season in League 2 helping Crewe get promoted and although many in the Netherlands believe Willems will still be a PSV player next season, it may not be long till he is Patrice Evra’s understudy.
With his speed, technical ability and tireless running Willems could seamlessly take Evra’s let back position and make it his own. Patrice Evra had a difficult year last season after being caught up in one of many racism scandals that dogged an otherwise fantastic term in the Premiership.
At times he was his fearless marauding self backing up Ashley Young or Nani on the left wing and causing havoc for oppositions defence whilst simultaneously making sure that no threat to De Gea’s goal came from his channel. But with age and fitness catching up with him over a long season he was starting to be exploited. The right back position has been up for grabs since Gary Neville retired and now it seems that the left back position will be one added to Fergie’s ‘must strengthen’ list.
You may be saying ‘What about the Brazilian Nevilles?’ Well whilst Rafael is due to sign a new contract after showing promising signs last season coupled with a need for more discipline, his twin brother Fabio is going to be shipped out on loan to give him more game time. This will apparently be the first time the two brothers haven’t lived in the same post code.
The stage looks set for Jetro Willems to become the latest target of Sir Alex with high recommendation coming from the same man that originally saw Anderson as well as many of the Athletic Bilbao players that are on Man United’s wish list. Around £10 million is the sum that could tempt PSV into letting Willems go but if I was able to have a word with the great Scotsman I would tell him that he should do everything in his power to make Willems a United player for next season.
With Manchester City due to utilise their incredible financial prowess to lure in players United must fall back on what has served them so well since the Premiership’s birth, youth. This man could be the first piece of the puzzle that solves the problem of Manchester City’s immenent dominance.
