This definitely makes sense to the United fans in the Football Transfer Tavern…
The same question has been on the lips of everyone here in the Football Transfer Tavern: what dirt does Wayne Rooney have on Jose Mourinho?
The United faithful cannot understand it. Despite his poor form, Mourinho continues to pick Wayne Rooney every week – so he must have a personal reason for that fact.
That could certainly be the case, but an interesting perspective shared on Twitter could have the real answer as to why Rooney is so consistently in the United first team setup – regardless of form.
The reasoning given is a matter of finances. Given that Rooney is often a poster boy for England and Man Utd – the club has a responsibility to play him under any and all circumstances.
They suggest that contractual agreements with brands might also be forcing their hand, with agreements possibly demanding that United’s biggest earners get regular game time with the club.

The argument doesn’t have any real evidence, other than Rooney’s continual presence on the pitch – but it is still believable.
It would help to explain why, despite numerous managerial changes, Rooney is still a constant.
Man Utd are a globally recognised brand, and everything that the club does focuses on building that brand and building the club. Huge earners like Wayne Rooney are a huge part of that process.
Our landlord isn’t too sure – but he thinks it definitely would make sense.
Man Utd fans – do you agree? Or is there something else?
