The Chelsea fans had high hopes for young Brazilian Kenedy when Guus Hiddink was in charge…
Though naturally an attacker, Hiddink utilised him as a wing-back, and he seriously impressed. This makes rumours emanating from Goal, that are suggesting that the Blues could sell him this summer, particularly concerning. Indeed, our landlord thinks that it would be a huge mistake.
For starters, you have to consider his qualities. As an attacker, he offers brilliant acceleration, trickery and technical ability – able to deliver a pinpoint cross or blast one into a top corner. He is also a hard worker, often tracking back as part of a fluid formation. Likewise, when played a defender or wing-back, Kenedy proved that he could hold his own – able to hold off even the most seasoned of attackers.
This is particularly relevant for Chelsea now since the arrival of Antonio Conte, as his defensive pedigree would fit a 3-man defensive system perfectly. Able to serve as a backup to Marcos Alonso, there is no doubting that the Brazilian would be able to do a job.
What’s more, he is also still just 21-years-old – with his best years ahead of him. The fact that he was able to comfortably hold his own in a Chelsea shirt is quite remarkable – and Conte should realise that.
Sure, he has had a quiet year or so, but due to the fact that he started so young – that shouldn’t be an issue. He is still young enough to reach his potential, and whilst he might not be ready to start every week – there is no doubting that he has the quality to do a job eventually.
