The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that their side’s fine run of form will continue this week. Arsene Wenger’s men put in a sensational performance over the weekend against Tottenham, shocking the fans in the pub by coming through with a surprising victory.
There is no time to rest for the Gunners, though, with another game on the cards on Thursday night. This time around, Arsenal are set for a test against FC Köln in the Europa League, with the Gunners impressing in Europe so far this term.
Given the relative lack of importance that Arsene Wenger has placed on the Europa League, the competition has largely been seen as a platform to offer fringe players a chance at semi-regular football. Thus, it’s widely expected in the pub that most of the players that won against Spurs will not feature from the start.
However, one player that our landlord thinks should start is Mesut Özil. The German has had a tough season, yet over the weekend he was simply sesnsational. Arguably Arsenal’s best player, he looks to be finally gaining a head of steam, and it wouldn’t be wise for Wenger to stop his momentum by dropping him again. Sure, a day off could do him good, but if he performs well again, there will be no doubting that the Özil of old is back.
What’s more, Özil’s experience against German competition – owing back to his time in the Bundesliga – will also be important, offering the Gunners more of a chance of victory on the night.
Surely he has to start? Let us know below!
