According to Calcio Mercato, Chelsea are keen on a move for Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan. It is said that a fee of around €50 million (£43.7 million) could be enough to land him this summer, and whilst that may be tempting for Antonio Conte, it is a deal that makes very little sense…
For starters, you have to consider Chelsea’s current squad. N’Golo Kante was fantastic last season, whilst Nemanja Matic did a very solid job of partnering him in the midfield. Beyond that, there is also Cesc Fabregas, who excelled towards the end of the season, and even Nathaniel Chalobah, who looked good when given an opportunity. Add to that the rumours of Tiemoue Bakayoko moving to Stamford Bridge, and the vast depth on display in the Chelsea midfield becomes clear.
You may question, then, whether Chelsea could look to the Belgian instead of Bakayoko – but that would make very little sense too. There is talk that a move for Bakayoko could be around the £35 million mark, placing it more than £8 million below a move for Nainggolan. Add to that his comparative youth and, indeed, his achievements – and a move for the Frenchman begins to make far more sense. Naionggolan is 29-years-old, remember, and so would only be a short-term solution.
There is no doubting that Nainggolan is a top player. He has been a star in Serie A in recent years. But for Chelsea, a move would make no sense.
