Liverpool supporters have been downbeat in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side’s wonderful 18-match unbeaten run come to a shuddering halt courtesy of a 1-0 defeat to Swansea City on Monday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash in South Wales having not tasted defeat since October, and off the back of beating Premier League leaders Manchester City in their preceding league outing. However, the Reds produced a limp performance at the Liberty Stadium and were deservedly beaten thanks to Alfie Mawson’s first half strike, in turn sealing a crucial three points for Carlos Carvalhal’s side, at the same time denting Liverpool’s top four aspirations.
Subsequently, there have been many frustrated Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Daily Star, which suggests that Roma ‘could’ target striker Daniel Sturridge if their forward Edin Dzeko makes the move to Chelsea.
28-year-old Sturridge has seen first team opportunities hard to come by at Anfield this season and knows that regular football is needed to make England’s World Cup squad this summer, thus opening up the possibility of a move this month.
Inter Milan have reportedly been linked with the forward, yet recent reports suggest that Roma, who could lose former Man City man Dzeko to Chelsea this month, ‘could’ target the Liverpool man in a bid to replace the Bosnia international.
And with Sturridge highly unlikely to get the minutes required at Liverpool in the second half of the season, it’s a deal which could well take place in the last eight days of the window.
Landlord’s verdict: It hasn’t worked out for Daniel Sturridge at Liverpool since Jurgen Klopp’s appointment as manager back in October 2015, but this season in particular is a key one for the striker given the World Cup at the end of it.
As such, his future, in the short term at least, appears to be away from Anfield, and Italian giants Roma are another side who ‘could’ reportedly throw their hat into the ring should Chelsea sign their striker Edin Dzeko this month.
And given that Inter Milan have reportedly been the side pursuing Sturridge must intensely in recent times, it very much remains to be seen where his future lies, what with this transfer saga possibly set for another intriguing turn.
