With Tottenham enjoying this impressive foray into Europe many of their players are wrongly being treated as if they are in the shop window by a host of Italian sides.
We have already been told that Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and Sandro have been subject of enquiries from Serie A sides, well now you can add Aaron Lennon to that list because our friends at TalkSport claim that Juventus are interested in signing the flying English winger.
Lennon began his career in the youth academy at Leeds whom he joined in 2001, he made his first team debut for the club in 2003. He soon became a regular in the first team and his electric pace and fantastic dribbling ability made him one of the most exciting performers at Elland Road. After two succesful seasons playing for Leeds, the player had to be sold due to the financial problems at the Yorkshire club, Tottenham managed to secure the player for a ludicrous fee of just £1million.
He went straight into the Spurs first team and has been a vital performer for the White Hart Lane side ever since. His excellent performances from the flanks also brought him into the national set up and he has representing England 19 times. Now in his 6th season with the club the 23 year old (sounds ridiculous I know) is supposedly attracting the attention of former Italian greats Juventus.
This is where the story gets a bit ridiculous. Supposedly the Turin side have been impressed with the players performances in Europe this season and think they can tempt Harry Redknapp to sell one of his top performers for a fee of around £20million, there are a couple of reasons that I simply do not see this story taking off.
Firstly ‘Arry is not in the position where he needs to sell any of his star players. Spurs have a multitude of players that can play in the midfield and there are many others that will be shown the door before the pacey winger. The club don’t need the money, so even though £20million would demonstrate an amazing profit considering they only originally payed £1million for the player I just see no reason for them to sell.
The second point is that I am totally unsure as to why the player would fancy the move. Spurs are progressing well in the Champions League and are looking in a good situation to be in the tournament again next year, where as Juventus only played in the Europa League this season and they don’t look like they will be challenging for the title or Champions League places again this time round.
The Turin side are trying to reshape themselves into contenders and maybe they see Lennon as part of that process, I just don’t see why Lennon would swap London for Turin at this point in his career. I think there is more chance of Jamie Carragher being on Nani’s Christmas card list than Lennon moving to Juve.
