Chelsea have been linked with AZ Alkmaar youngster Adam Maher as they continue to look for young talent and build for the future under Roberto Di Matteo.
The 19-year old midfielder was capped by the Netherlands for the first time last month and has been tipped for great things by Dutch experts after some impressive performances in the Eredivisie.
The Stamford Bridge outfit have made no secret of the fact that they are signing players so that they can build a team for the next few seasons, and whilst Eden Hazard and Oscar have already made their mark on the first team, others such as Thibaut Courtois, Kevin de Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku are gaining vital first-team experience elsewhere.
Maher may not be included in the Blues’ line-up straight away, but with a reported price tag of just £5million and a number of admirers also battling for his signature he could become one of Di Matteo’s shrewdest pieces of business to date should he make his move in January.
It is no secret that Frank Lampard isn’t as young as he used to be, and despite playing some of the best football of his career in recent months, the England international will have to be succeeded at some stage, and Maher seems the perfect fit to take over from Chelsea’s record Premier League goalscorer.
He has a modest goalscoring record in his short career thus far, but at such a young age he could be molded into a player that could mix both precision passing and an eye for goal that would match many of the world’s top strikers.
Whether Di Matteo brings in the midfielder in January remains to be seen, but fans of the West London outfit have the right to be excited by this proposed move for one of Europe’s hottest prospects.
