There are some interesting reports arriving in the Football Transfer Tavern from talkSPORT this evening.
The publication indicate that Chelsea will have to fend off attention from AC Milan to land Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso on a free transfer.
The former Liverpool midfielder’s contract is set to expire at the end of the current season, and that could see him departing the Bernabeu with no real sign of a new deal for the Spanish giants.
New Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti could allow the 31-year-old to leave after he made the purchase of Asier Illarramendi in the summer plus his continued pursuit for Blues ace Ramires further intensifying speculation.
Jose Mourinho, of course, worked with Alonso in Madrid, and believes that the classy midfield man could boost his current set up as he looks to bring Premier League success back to Stamford Bridge.
However today’s rumours indicate that Milan are also eager to snap up the deep lying playmaker, and could now rival Chelsea for his signature if Madrid decided to let him leave.
Alonso will be free to negotiate with potential suitors on January as he looks to sign a pre-contract agreement and we expect to see far more speculation in the tavern about the Spain international in the next few weeks as the chase hots up.
