There are some interesting reports from Mirror Football today that suggest former Liverpool manager and now Napoli boss Rafael Benitez wants to sign Reds striker Luis Suarez to replace Edinson Cavani this summer, despite Suarez’ admiration of Real Madrid.
Benitez is still regarded in the highest regard at Anfield after taking the Reds to their memorable Champions League triumph in 2005 but trying to sign their best player could seriously anger the Kop faithful, whereas others may want to cut their ties with the controversial Uruguayan.
Napoli are expecting to see Suarez’ Uruguayan team-mate Edinson Cavani depart the Stadio San Paolo when the transfer window opens and with Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City desperate to sign the impressive marksman they can expect to receive about £50 million for his services.
The Mirror suggests that this will give them the spending ability to match Real Madrid in their pursuit of Suarez with the positive of offering the unsettled striker Champions League next season, unlike the Reds.
Despite this speculation we can’t really see Suarez swapping Anfield for Italy with a move to Madrid far more likely if he decides to leave Merseyside during the summer.
