The spectacle of Brazil – Scotland this weekend was perhaps most interesting for the players that came off the bench, the players that weren’t house hold names but yet still demonstrated the skill and flair that seems to just exist in all Brazilian footballers at any level.
Today we bring you a story about Renato Augusto, a Brazilian who has already made the move to Europe and is already pretty well known. He replaced the genius Neymar at the Emirates and only got a minute on the pitch but the 23 year old has been lauded in Brazil as a star, and even though he is already middle aged in terms of Brazilian starlets there is still belief that he can be a huge name.
Reports today suggest that Liverpool and Newcastle are preparing to offer the attacking midfielder a place on the Premier League stage to shine.
Renato began his playing career coming through the youth ranks at Flamengo before making his debut for the first team in 2005. He went on to play 4 seasons for the club before moving to Europe where he plays in the Bundesliga for Bayer Leverkusen, with whom he has been a great success.
Noted from a young age for his pace, exceptional dribbling skills and control as well as superb passing ability, Renato has everything at his disposal to shine, the only problems have been an early career blighted by injuries. If he had remained fit he would have gone on to become a big part of the Brazilian national side.
The midfielder, who can also play on the wing, cost Leverkusen £8million and it is thought that it would take English teams in excess of £15million to secure the player, and competition is high. As well as Kenny Dalglish wanting to take him to Liverpool there is also interest from West Ham United and Newcastle. Previously the player was extensively linked with Manchester City but their offer of £14million was dismissed out of hand.
In my mind I find it unlikely that West Ham would be able to secure the player, he is a top talent and even if West Ham survive I am not sure the club would be seen as a step up in the players mind. He is the sort of mercurial talent that would light up Tyneside however and if they can finish the season strongly he may be attracted to the Toon but again it does seem unlikely.
Liverpool however must be favourites, he provides that sort of fantasy football and flair that the Anfield side would benefit from, and I think it is a suitable level for the player as well. If they could put a deal together that was deemed acceptable to Bayer Leverkusen then they could have a really exciting player on their hands, and if he is able to put his injury problems behind him he could be a real asset!
