It was a disappointing weekend for the Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern. Losing games is an unfamiliar feeling for them nowadays, but on Saturday, Jose Mourinho’s Man Utd were able to inflict a rare defeat on the Lilywhites – with Anthony Martial the saviour on the day. It was far from a poor performance from Mauricio Pochettino’s men, but they never really looked particularly threatening for much of the game.
This can be put down to more than a few factors, but Sky Sports pundit Stuart Pearce believes that the absence of Harry Kane was the main problem for Mauricio Pochettino. Grading Tottenham’s performance as a C+, Pearce has described Kane’s importance to his team as ‘frightening’.
Pearce said: “The critical scenario for them was Harry Kane missing. I think he turns it in their favour if he’s playing in the game, but he wasn’t there on Saturday and I think it cost them the result”.
He added: “It is as straightforward as that with Tottenham. They are another team who can’t handle their key players missing and Kane is so key for them, it’s frightening”.
Kane was, of course, injured for the clash – with Mauricio Pochettino confirming his absence in the lead-up to the game.
In truth, it’s tough to disagree. Kane’s importance to this team cannot be understated.
He’s their top goalscorer this term, and he provides so much more than that, too. He’s a key feature in the attack both for his goals and, indeed, those of his teammates.
Mauricio Pochettino will want him back as soon as possible.
