The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern think very highly of young Gunner Rob Holding…
Signed in a surprise deal in 2016, Holding impressed during his first few months in the Premier League, but since that point – he has fallen off the radar at the Emirates. Now, with the Premier League at the halfway point – is it time for the young defender to go out on loan?
At 21-years-old, Holding needs to be playing regular football, and at Arsenal – he just isn’t getting that. With the likes of Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny ahead of him in the pecking order at the Emirates, the likelihood of Holding getting a regular spot in the Arsenal first team is unlikely.
He has been limited to a couple of games every month so far this season, with Holding making just 7 starts in all competitions since he joined, and that is a record that is simply not good enough for a player of his potential.
You can understand Arsene Wenger’s perspective, of course. With his own future uncertain, he wants to ensure that the Gunners finish the season strongly – and so going with Mustafi and Koscielny is certainly the best option in that regard. Holding is a decent player, but he is raw, young and inexperienced – and Wenger needs to favour proven quality at present.
If Holding were to go on loan, he would likely be able to play every single week – provided that the deal is right for him – and that can only be a good thing. You can only learn so much from training alongside players – at his age, he just needs to be playing every week.
Sure, you could argue that he is useful as depth at Arsenal – but Wenger has a number of options to choose from, and he cannot be shortsighted in his thinking.
Arsenal need to be thinking long-term, and Holding is undoubtedly a player for the future. But if he keeps going in the routine that he currently is, he risks stagnating. With just a few days to go until the end of the transfer window, this is the deal that Arsene Wenger needs to get done…
