The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern had high hopes for Kurt Zouma…
The Frenchman impressed early doors at Stamford Bridge, before a cruel injury ruled him out for the best part of a year. Since that point, he has struggled to regain fitness – and so it might be time for the Frenchman to leave the club this summer – albeit temporarily.
Last season, the Frenchman rarely featured – even when fit. The trio of Gary Cahill, Cesar Azpilicueta and Gary Cahill was unstoppable for much of the season, and next season, things are only going to get tougher. Andreas Christensen is set to return, whilst Nathan Ake is also likely to be calling for a starting berth – not to mention any potential signings that Chelsea make. In that sense, Zouma is likely to be close to the back of the queue – and he must recognise that.
His main problem last season was a lack of fitness. This is fair enough – he had an awful injury, and came back into a side that was doing very well. However, in order to really gain that edge and get the sharpness back, Zouma needs to be playing regularly, and for the reasons listed above, he might need to leave in order to find the game time that he is looking for.
Next season is going to be important for Chelsea, and Conte can’t afford to carry anyone. Zouma is still a top player, and he has a future at Stamford Bridge, but a move away makes sense.
