The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly frustrated at the number of players currently on loan away from the club. The Blues have one of the biggest squads in Europe, yet much of the talent on the Chelsea books is shipped off to hone their craft elsewhere.
Many of these players, in the opinion of our landlord, could still be doing a job at Stamford Bridge, and that is certainly true of forgotten loanee Marco van Ginkel. The Dutchman has been a victim of circumstance more than anything, with injuries really stunting his development, but with PSV this season, he is turning into one of Europe’s most impressive midfielders.
Currently the captain of the Dutch team, the 25-year-old has controlled their midfield this season – and his success has been highlighted by the fact that the team have just been crowned league winners for the 2017/18 campaign.
A tall, dominating midfielder, van Ginkel’s presence in the midfield is evident, but his main qualities come with the ball at his feet. A willing runner, the Dutchman is excellent at moving the ball forward – both by dribbling and passing – and he’s regularly involved in PSV’s offensive moves. He’s also a fantastic goalscorer, having bagged 16 goals in all competitions this season.
What’s more, he’s also solid defensively. He isn’t afraid to put in a tackle, and that is what has made him so indispensable for PSV.
With Chelsea’s midfield struggling, given Tiemoue Bakayoko’s failure to adapt, the Blues need more quality in the midfield. Van Ginkel has proven over the last year or two that he’s good enough, and it’s time for Chelsea to give him a chance.
