Newcastle United have made a steady enough start to life in the Premier League this season under Rafa Benitez, sitting in mid-table with three wins so far.
The Magpies will be looking to build on that decent start in the coming weeks and get some more points on the board, but they know to do this they will need to start scoring a few more goals.
Our landlord here in the Tavern has been less than impressed with one Newcastle striker. That striker is new signing and Spanish forward Joselu, who has thus far failed to hit the back of the net in the Premier League.
Our gaffer thinks that it’s time for Benitez to give last season’s top scorer Dwight Gayle a chance, with the former Crystal Palace man surely a more viable option than the summer signing from Stoke.
Gayle offers pace in behind for the Magpies, and while Joselu might be integral to how they set up as he offers more in terms of hold up play, forwards always will be judged on their goals scored.
Gayle gives the team something else to work with, as midfielders will have more options to play it over the top and in behind, while Gayle’s speed and ability to drag defenders around can create space for the rest of the team.
He could definitely come in and offer the Toon Army something they have been missing, and Benitez would be wise to give him a chance.
