Former Aston Villa striker Stan Collymore have given credit to skipper Jack Grealish after turning down a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Grealish at home with Villa
The 25-year-old was a man in demand during the summer after his eye-catching performances, with Spurs’ boss Jose Mourinho reportedly keen to take the Englishman to North London. Of course, Mauricio Pochettino was also strongly linked with move for the England international.
From 191 appearances for Dean Smith’s side, Grealish has scored 29 times and provided 34 assists, taking his career total to 40 adding to his short stint at Notts County and his time in the U23s squad, as per TransferMarkt.
Does Jack Grealish deserve more credit with England?
Grealish, who was recently rewarded with his first England cap, has clearly earned the respect of a former Villa Park ace, who believes that his performances have come from the decision to stay where he is comfortable.
Speaking with the Mirror, Collymore claimed that the playmaker deserves a lot of respect and stated that he has the ability to play for any top club if he wanted to.
“He made the right decision not moving when Spurs wanted him. He’d have just been in their squad at that point.
“Since then Jack has taken a step up and is a serious player.
“Well done for not taking that move, helping get Villa into the top flight, but he can play for any elite club now.”
Villa fans will obviously have been delighted with Grealish’s decision over the warmer months. The England international could have easily decided to walk away if he wanted to after his side earned promotion or even after they stayed up by the skin of their teeth.
Smith deserves a lot of credit for moulding Grealish into a leader of men, which has been one of several reasons why his side have had such a stunning start to the new campaign.
If he keeps performing at this high level, it will be inevitable that more clubs will come calling for his services in the near future.
In the meantime, Grealish just needs to keep doing what he’s doing, for club and country, and show the world what he is all about.
