Liverpool are set to take on Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday in what could prove to be a hugely important clash for the Reds. Chelsea know a thing or two about crushing Liverpudlian dreams, as they did following Steven Gerrard’s infamous slip at Anfield, and they’ll certainly be out to wreak havoc on Jurgen Klopp’s men.
As per Sky Sports, Carragher said: ‘I think Liverpool are a better side than Chelsea, but the reason why I think they’ll win on Super Sunday is because I think they’ve got a big advantage. They’ll have played Friday, Tuesday, Sunday. Chelsea will have played Monday, Thursday – and an away game in Europe – Sunday. For that reason alone, I think Liverpool will win.’
This week could go down as a season-defining one for Chelsea, and it’s no surprise that Maurizio Sarri has bemoaned the Blues’ fixture congestion. Chelsea played West Ham on Monday, and the Europa League returns on Sunday. Both games hold key significance for the Blues in pursuit of European football next season – and so it’s not even like they can rotate or use a second-string side in either game.
Liverpool, admittedly, do have important fixtures too – but even a day or two of extra rest could offer them the energy needed to help seal a win against the Blues.
Of course, at the highest level, the tiniest margins make all the difference, and so Jurgen Klopp will take any advantage that he can get.
Liverpool are heading into the game in good form, and they’ll view a win as a huge step towards bagging the Premier League title. For both teams, it’s a hugely important game, and it’s rare that that’s the case at this stage of the season. Normally a team is only playing for pride; but not this time. Both teams will want the win – and it’s down to Liverpool or Chelsea to take the bull by the horns.
