For the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern, a few new signings in January are essential. With a top-four spot clearly the target of Jurgen Klopp, he’ll need to improve his team, especially given the talent on display at the likes of the Emirates Stadium, Stamford Bridge and Wembley.
Improvement is needed in several areas, but former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has been speaking with the Liverpool Echo, and he has revealed where he thinks the main changes need to come.
According to the Liverpool Echo, Carragher said: “We all know Van Dijk was the one [Klopp] wanted [in defence], so because he never got another centre-back…now he’s waiting until maybe January or the end of the season”.
“I hope it’s January”, he added.
Liverpool have really struggled defensively this season. They’ve conceded 20 in the Premier League, which is 8 more than Man Utd and Man City, and it’s 6 more than Chelsea. Clearly, then, their defence is in a tier below the top clubs, and that’s something that needs to change.
Van Dijk would, of course, be a great target, and he’d no doubt become a popular man at Anfield, but Klopp needs to bring someone in in January, as Carragher says, and it would be a mistake to place all of the eggs in the van Dijk basket once again.
That being said, the Southampton defender would be a good choice, mainly due to the fact that he is proven in the Premier League, and so will be able to come in and do a job with very little uncertainty.
It remains to be seen who, or indeed if, Liverpool will sign this January, but clearly Carragher is firmly behind the idea of bringing a new centre-back in.
Liverpool’s defence is shaky, that much is clear.
Carragher knows better than most, especially when talking about the defence, and so Klopp would be wise to listen closely.
They can’t afford to wait until the summer, as by then their Champions League hopes could well be over.
