Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Brighton was another game where the defending of Unai Emery’s side was very suspect.
In contrast, the visitors put in a very sturdy display at the back, with Lewis Dunk impressing in particular.
And following the 27-year-old’s defensive masterclass at the Emirates, Jamie Redknapp believes he is exactly the sort of central defender Arsenal should go out and buy in the summer.
“Arsenal have conceded 50 goals for the second season running but the solution to their leaky defence was staring them in the face on Sunday,” the Sky Sports pundit wrote in his Daily Mail column.
“Brighton’s Lewis Dunk defended like a warrior and would be an upgrade on any of the centre halves at the Emirates. He may not be the most easy on the eye but he just loves the art of defending. He is exactly what this Arsenal team needs.”
As reactionary as Redknapp’s words may sound, the former Tottenham and Liverpool midfielder certainly has a point.
Since Brighton won promotion to the Premier League, Dunk has shown that he is a very capable central defender at this level.
And compared to someone like Shkodran Mustafi, he would absolutely be an upgrade.
It is something to think about for Emery, especially considering the transfer budget he is likely to be working with in the summer.
Be it Dunk or another name, the Spaniard undoubtedly needs to strengthen his central defence.
If not, the Gunners could be in for another season where they find themselves sitting outside the top four.
