Jan Vertonghen confident Spurs will extend his contract

Tottenham Hotspur have the option to extend one of their key player’s contract by a further year, and he believes the club will exercise their right to do so.

According to a report by HLN in Belgium, Jan Vertonghen has revealed that he has no concerns about heading into the final 12 months of his present deal.

The 31-year-old knows that he has the option inserted into his current deal and expects Spurs to use it, especially considering he had a great season for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

“My contract is expiring at the end of the season, but Tottenham have an option to extend it with one year. I think they will take up the option. We’ll see what happens,” he told HLN.

The £28.8million-rated enforcer, as per Transfermarkt, has been key to Tottenham and Pochettino’s side following his arrival from Ajax in 2012 and has already played every available minute of their Premier League campaign so far.

The Verdict:

Spurs will likely want to keep Vertonghen at the club for as long as possible but will need to extend his deal before January, as he will be free to speak to other clubs about a potential departure.

The Belgium international has been a key figure for the club over the past six years and has been a leader on and off the pitch for Pochettino’s side.

Tottenham will return to action with a home match against Liverpool in the Premier League following the international break and will be hoping Vertonghen will be at his best when they welcome the deadly trio the Reds have up front.
