West Ham supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been in good spirits in the last week or so following their side’s upturn in form.
The East London outfit suffered defeat in each of their opening three Premier League matches to increase the pressure on under-fire manager Slaven Bilic, but his team responded with a 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town last Monday in their first game at the London Stadium.
A 0-0 draw at West Brom followed on Saturday to suggest that the Hammers are making strides ahead of the rest of the season, and some of our resident West Ham fans will be intrigued by a recent report in The Daily Star, which outlines Jack Wilshere’s desire to move to the club in January.
The 25-year-old spent last season on loan at Premier League side Bournemouth in a bid for regular first team football and to improve his fitness, yet his return to the Emirates Stadium hasn’t quite gone as well as expected, with the midfielder playing just 22 minutes of football for the senior side.
And with his contract up at the end of the campaign, it looks like the England international’s future at the North London outfit is all but over, and reports suggest that Wilshere is hoping the Hammers will reignite their interest in him when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.
Bilic’s men were reportedly unwilling to splash out the £20 million Arsenal wanted for the 25-year-old, but as his contract nears expiration, the Hammers may sense an opportunity for a cut-price deal in January.
Landlord’s verdict: Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere was tipped to be the next big thing for both club and country many years ago, but things just haven’t worked out for the England star.
The 25-year-old’s recurrent injury issues saw him shipped out on loan to Bournemouth last season, and with just 22 minutes of first team action this time round at the Emirates Stadium, he doesn’t appear to have a future with the Gunners.
West Ham were reportedly interested in the midfielder during the summer but weren’t willing to match the asking price, yet the man himself reportedly wants the Hammers to reignite their interest in a bid to resurrect his flailing career.
A fresh start at the London Stadium could be exactly what Wilshere needs to get his career back on track.
