There are sensational reports arriving in the Football Transfer Tavern this evening as today’s Metro excites punters.
The publication state that Tottenham will make a fresh attempt to sign Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao in the January transfer window.
Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas already tried to recruit the Portuguese international in the summer as part of the deal taking Gareth Bale to the Bernabeu but the defender wasn’t willing to move to a side not featuring in the Champions League this term.
Instead Coentrao was seconds away from joining Manchester United on loan but the deal failed to meet the set deadline.
Despite staying at the Bernabeu, he has struggled for regular football under new Real manager Carlo Ancelotti and has only started three games as the Italian continues to prefer Marcelo as the club’s first choice left back.
Compatriot Villas-Boas is known to be a big fan of the classy left back and the paper understands that a loan deal could be on the cards.
Madrid are still trying to raise extra funds for any January business of their own but they are under no pressure to loan out Coentrao, who is reportedly on £100,000-a-week with the La Liga giants.
At White Hart Lane, Belgian international Jan Vertonghen has filled in at left back for the last few matches but as one punter points out, he has made it very clear that he does not enjoy playing in that position.
With both Danny Rose and Kyle Naughton injured, Spurs look short at left back and a move for the Portugal star would make some sense.
While Coentrao holds a desire to play at the highest level, the 25-year-old will certainly be seeking more football ahead of a possible World Cup campaign in Brazil, something he could attain with Villas-Boas’ side in North London.
Will Coentrao’s move to Tottenham finally come to fruition this January? Let us know your thoughts below.
