Although things could be a lot better for Southampton, the past four months have clearly shown what they are capable of achieving, right? Ralph Hasenhuttl has certainly managed to bring some confidence to the players and still have a chance of remaining in the Premier League beyond the end of the season, despite their rather precarious position.
The Saints have had a difficult campaign that has not been helped at times, whilst the manager appears to favour the younger talent within the squad to try and help them solve their problems and push on a little.
He had another young talent on his transfer shortlist in January, however, a move ultimately failed to happen. But, it does appear as though the player would be willing to make the switch if given the opportunity in the future.
What’s the News?
Joakim Maehle was heavily-linked with a move to Southampton in the winter transfer window and Danish media outlet BT asked him about it, to which he confirmed that he knew the interest was concrete and would be hopeful that there may be a chance in the future.
“I know it was very concrete – but I really don’t know how close it was,” he said. “The club wouldn’t sell. And I have no idea how much more was needed before they would sell.”
He then added: “I don’t know if you can say I was clear or unclear (when asked if he would be ready for a switch). But it is certain that there was a lot of interest from Southampton. Hopefully there will be a chance, and then we will see what happens.”
Maehle has been remarkably honest about the interest from Southampton in him and if he continues to put in a number of top performances for Genk, then there would be no real reason as to why the Saints should not go in for him once again in the summer.
The right-back is very versatile, as he can play on either the right-hand side of defence or further forward in a midfield position, which could give Hasenhuttl something extra to think about. The 21-year-old is very good when going forward as he has plenty of pace and agile, whilst he is also an aggressive player who likes to run up and down the wing all day.
The Denmark Under-21 international is a player who fits the profile of what the manager likes, as he is still very young although he does possess plenty of experience of having played in European competitions.
However, with Yan Valery and Kayne Ramsey both rather excelling when offered their opportunities, whether a move in the summer for Maehle still remains something that Southampton are keen on doing remains to be seen.
Southampton fans, do you think Hasenhuttl should look to sign him in the summer? Or do you think Valery is good enough to make that spot his own in the first-team? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
