Newcastle United could be about to smash their club-record transfer fee for the second time in one calendar year.
According to claims made in Germany by Sport1, 1899 Hoffenheim’s Joelinton is expected to join the Premier League outfit in a deal worth around €60million (£52 million).
It is understood that negotiations for the Brazilian forward have been ongoing for weeks and a deal is expected to be wrapped up early next week.
It is also claimed that the move will still go ahead even if Rafa Benitez’s side are relegated from the Premier League this season, something that could still happen to The Magpies.
Joelinton is an extremely versatile forward, as the 22-year-old can play anywhere across the front three and has been in fine form for the Bundesliga outfit.
He has registered 10 goals so far and eight assists in his 28 matches across all competitions.
It would be extremely difficult to believe these reports, given the history of Newcastle United in the transfer window.
Miguel Almiron’s arrival in January was the first time the club broke their record signing since 2005, and it would seem unlikely that the club would spend €60m on a player.
With the idea of being relegated not affecting a possible deal also does not quite make sense, so this will be a deal that many at St James’ Park will not anticipate happening.
